Emma leads the charities team having joined the firm in 2007 from a leading London charity practice.

She specialises in governance and constitutional issues for charities and not for profit organisations, including community interest companies and advises trustees and directors on their legal duties and responsibilities.

Main areas of work include the registration of new charities, incorporations and governance restructuring, mergers, collaborations and partnerships, trading, fundraising and tax, commercial contracts affecting charities and compliance issues, including Charity Commission requirements.

Helen is a Partner and Notary Public. She is also head of the Private Capital Team within the Private Wealth department.

Helen handles all aspects of private client work, with particular emphasis on asset protection and capital taxes planning for high net worth individuals. Her main areas of expertise include wills, trusts, inheritance tax, probate, lasting powers of attorney, advance decisions and advice on the death benefits of life and pension policies. Helen acts as a trustee for many family trusts and advises on all aspects of trusteeship and trust management. She has a particular interest in legal issues relating to end of life decision making and succession and capacity issues relating to people with property interests in more than one country.

Helen is a member of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and an English Notary Public which enables her to authenticate documents to be used in foreign countries.

Jo specialises in advising charities and those who work with charities on all aspects of charity law and governance. 

Whether establishing new charitable organisations for philanthropists, or advising national household name charities on new projects or ventures, Jo delivers the project efficiently and in a straightforward manner. 

Jo advises across the range of charitable activity and has particular experience in advising religious bodies on restructuring and managing complex trust arrangements.

Her experience in managing charity mergers includes acting on the merger that formed Cancer Research UK, the four national Age UK charities and more recently the merger of St Mungo’s Broadway. 

With the Charity Commission becoming a more active regulator, Jo has advised numerous charities who face questions from the Commission or who are subject to a section 46 Inquiry. 

Jo is a member of the Executive Committee of the Charity Law Association and Chaired the working party on the Charities (Protection and Social Investment) Act and gave evident  to the Joint Scrutiny Committee in the House of Lords.  Jo lectures on issues of charity law and writes regularly for the sector press.  She also serves as a school governor.

Andrew advises clients in relation to all aspects of rural property and has acted in the sale and purchase of many large farms and estates, and agricultural and residential rural property portfolios.

His particular area of expertise lies in acting for landowners in the grant of options and leases to wind farm operators, whether for turbine development or access and infrastructure. He has also acted for clients looking to install their own small or mid-wind turbines on farms to take advantage of Feed in Tariff. He has also acted for landowners in relation to Solar PV development agreements, and on anaerobic digestion projects.

Andrew advises on the grant of and on issues arising from agricultural tenancies, commercial leases and easements. He has particular expertise in advising site providers, whether greenfield or rooftop, on the grant of leases to communications operators. Andrew routinely acts for landowning clients on complex conditional sale contracts and overage agreements on the sale of rural landholdings for residential or commercial development.

Andrew has dealt with numerous voluntary first registration applications for major landowners, encompassing registration of their surface and mineral interests, where the latter may be derived by means of reservation on sale, or out of an historic manorial title. He has significant experience in advising mineral owners in the negotiation of prospecting agreements, option agreements, transfers and leases of minerals and now plays a key role in advising severed mineral owners looking to exploit their mineral interests in innovative ways where surface development is planned.

Deborah specialises in advising agricultural clients in relation to Wills and trusts aimed at retaining and protecting assets for the benefit of future generations. She also advises trustees about the scope of their powers and in varying existing trusts where appropriate. 

Deborah acts for a number of clients who lack the capacity to manage their financial affairs. She is one of only 60 Panel Deputies appointed by the Court of Protection to represent those people who lack the capacity to manage their financial affairs. 

Deborah acts as an expert witness advising on the likely fees for a Deputy as part of claims for damages arising out of personal injuries. She has acted for local authorities and the NHS as well as claimants in relation to such claims.

Adept at dealing with complex, esoteric and historical legal issues, David is an acknowledged expert in the field of manorial titles, manorial rights and mines and minerals. He is the head of our mining and minerals group and he has acted for several clients in the registration of hundreds of thousands of acres of mineral rights and in the protection of manorial rights under the Land Registration Act 2002. In particular, David advises mineral owning clients, landowners and developers with regard to minerals trespass.

David also specialises in agricultural property law. His work includes buying and selling farms, estates, woods and rural land. His clients include a number of large landed estates, private individuals, charities and other landowning organisations. His work is varied and includes general agricultural property work, grants of easements such as rights of way and water supplies and dealing with restrictive covenants and commercial property issues.

Additionally, David handles complex agricultural landlord and tenant issues, including matters arising under the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 and the Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995. He specialises in rural sporting matters, having acted in a number of sales, purchases, and leases of grouse moors, pheasant shoots and fishing rights.

Laura specialises in commercial property and agricultural property transactions.

She has significant experience acting for a cross section of landowning clients, including institutions, charities, private individuals, banks and developers.

Laura supports landowners with a variety of property issues. Her work ranges from drafting of leases for commercial premises to option agreements and the sale and purchase of commercial or agricultural property, including multi-let property. She has expertise in advising on tenancies, including agricultural land tenancies, both drafting new tenancies and terminating existing tenancies.

Laura has experience involving the development of agricultural land: acting for both landowners and developers, negotiating and drafting option agreements and conditional contracts.

In addition, Laura has become increasingly involved in advising on renewable energy projects by drafting options, leases and easements for solar and wind projects. Her experience includes advice on protected agricultural tenancies and the surrender of land in conjunction with exercise of the option agreements.

Richard is a private client lawyer, focusing on disputes about trusts and inheritance. He trained with Bond Dickinson’s predecessor firm, qualifying in 2008.

Richard’s specialist expertise is in representing clients in disputes concerning high value trusts and estates, including those involving assets held in multiple jurisdictions.  He also has an advisory practice assisting professional trustees and banks with the scope of their powers and duties when taking decisions.

His clients include professional trustees, major banks and other financial institutions, private individuals and charities.

He has experience of the full range of issues that can arise when trusts and estates become contested, from claims by disinherited spouses and family members under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, to disputes about less common issues such as forged wills and claims based on the doctrine of proprietary estoppel. He is also a member of the firm's Court of Protection team advising on contentious best interests decisions and statutory will applications.

Richard also has experience in advising on professional negligence and contractual claims for private clients and organisations involved in the private wealth sector, including claims involving allegations of fraud and dishonesty.

A graduate in statistics, Roy has 30 years’ experience in financial services. He previously worked on the distribution side of the industry for several life offices before, becoming an independent financial advisor in 1995. Roy provides both personal advice to individuals and trustees and corporate advice and guidance to employers and pension scheme trustees.

Personal advice includes investments, pensions and protection. Corporate advice to employers includes complying with auto enrolment legislation, reviewing ongoing appropriateness of existing pension arrangements and protecting the business from the death or serious illness of key employees or directors.

Guidance to pension scheme trustees is for both defined benefit schemes and defined contribution schemes on the ever-challenging funding issues (defined benefit) and need for reviewing existing governance procedures.

His focus is upon investment and pensions matters, however, he is more commonly involved in co-ordinating tax and legal matters for families with complex affairs.

Debbie is an experienced personal tax manager having worked in the profession for almost 25 years, predominately for a ‘Big 4’ accountancy firm, before joining Bond Dickinson in January 2016.

She generally deals with all areas of personal tax, advising high net worth and entrepreneurial individuals, partnerships and trusts on a wide variety of planning to minimise their current and future tax liabilities.

She has a particular interest in UK capital taxes and estate planning, especially in relation to inheritance tax and capital gains tax mitigation strategies.

She is the current Treasurer of the North East & Cumbria branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and is a qualified Accounting Technician, Chartered Tax Advisor and Trust and Estate Practitioner.

Steven provides personal tax advice on a wide variety of subjects. He has particular expertise in relation to UK Tax issues affecting non-resident and non-domiciled individuals. He also advises clients in relation to tax incentivised investments under the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). Steven works with Private Capital lawyers in provision of Inheritance Tax advice and manages the tax return compliance team Bond Dickinson dealing with self-assessment tax returns for individuals, trustees and estates.
